Design Project  3

STRATEGIES FOR VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Background

23/03/2021

This project is supposed to be an exploration of strategies in the context of visual communication, but more importantly it is the final project that i’d be undertaking within NID’s educational pedagogy, without the constraints of the ‘industry’.

I categorised my initial thoughts under two umbrellas: areas of interest, and objects and skills. The former looked at thematic areas, and the latter at the scope for the outcomes.

The chosen area/s of interest

FUTURES, SPECULATION, ETHICS, THE POLITICS OF DESIGN
The chosen objects & skills

Platforms, open systems, tools and toolkits, the aesthetics of social media

Early draft of a detailed mindmap on Miro

The goal with this preliminary mind-mapping was to come up with potential opportunity areas that this project could potentially explore.

Hypothesis   Research   Synthesis    Outcome(s)?

As of now, my hypothesis is that design faces political concerns which affect everyone- some people more than others, on various levels, and design practitioners need a code of ethics that can help us take the profession forward without being un-sustainable, unfair and unethical. This project would seek to trigger consciousness and start meaningful conversations on the politics and ethics of design.

Initial Research Question:

How can we move designers to be conscious about the politics of design, and trigger meaningful conversations on ethics in and outside design?

Making Sense of Making Sense: Conversations with people

PART 1 | 27/03/2021 : What is good?

PART 2 | 28/03/2021 : What is bad?

Everyone knows there are grey areas, but what is our rudimentary understanding of the black and white between which the greys lie?
